Step 2: How to Optimize Your Website

Here, in no particular order, are a few tips for optimizing your site. While every strategy is not listed, we’ve included some important strategies.

Keyword Research:
Look for keywords (keyword phrases) that are both relevant to your site topic and specific.

If you’re selling cookies, you want specific terms like double chocolate chip cookies, italian almond cookies. The more specific you are, the less competition there will be for those terms, thus improving your ranking.

Utilizing keyword research programs and taking the time, though tedious and time consuming to conduct the research, will yield better results in the long run.

Content:
Once you’ve decided on the best keywords, you’ll want to use them in your site’s body (content), and in your  site title and header tags. Be cautious not to overdo it though. Be mindful of your keyword density. Using the plan from step 1 above, determine your content around your keywords and try to stick to a singular main topic per page of your site. For example, your site may contain recipes. The recipe page will contain a list with links to each recipe, with each recipe being on a separate page.

Photos:
Put photos on your site and make sure you’ve named each and every one with relevant keywords. For example: chocolate-chip-cookie

Clean Site Code:
Web pages should be W3C Compliant. Search Engines’ bots will crawl through your  website by analyzing your code. Error-free code enables the bots to index each page of your site. Errors could result in lower page rank because all your pages are not indexed.

Links:
Improve your ranking by building incoming links from trusted sites. Avoid heavy reciprocal links, paid link-backs and please be wary of link schemes.

Title Tags:
Title Tags tell search engines and users what the topic of a particular page is. If you’ve followed our advice under content, listing each topic on a separate page, then each page will have the ideal, unique title tag. Make sure the title is relevant to the page content. You should avoid vague title tags and overstuffing with unnecessary keywords.

Description Meta Tags:
The description is a summary of what the page is about. Your description can be a sentence or a short paragraph. Avoid duplicating your title tag in the description. Use a unique description for each page of your site.

Ease of Navigation:
Your site should help it’s visitors quickly find the information they want. While Google’s search results are returned at page level, they like to know the bigger picture as well and what role a specific page plays. Avoid too many clicks to reach content.

Video:
Video content is always nice, users love video. But avoid just throwing a video on your page without content as well. Yes, we understand that the video effectively relays your message to your viewer, but the text will speak to the search engine.
